Will ISO 19770 raise the importance of SAM for IT Managers or will it remain at the bottom of everyone's To Do List? |

Does anyone have a template or an example of a Definitive Media Library? Trying to set one up and need all the help I can get. Saw a SAM sheet but not sure if this is up to date.

Hi June,
Not sure what you mean specifically by a "template" unless you mean the questions you tick off when adding something to the DML. Hope the info below helps....
The DML can be a logical (on a secure server) or physical environment (locked filing cabinet) or both!.
As long as we have somewhere SECURE to store our cd's, dvd's, source code and licenses we fullfil that part of a DML.
The key is to have rigid procedures and process around the control of the CI's (Configuration Items). Often there is a checklist that has to be completed for new CI's coming into the DML, for example:
- Is the CI authentic
- Does it have an appropriate licence
- Is it the correct version
- Has it been purchased via a valid source
- Is there a Purchase order record / invoice for the CI
- Is it compatable with our environment (eg Windows or Mac)
- has a CI record in an et database or CMDB been created for the new CI
- has it been scanned for viruses and should probably be labelled or stamped to confirm this. Don't ume that because the software looks like the real thing that it does not contain a virus.
make sure the process ensures the DML is controlled with only a couple of people authorised to accept new CI's to the DML and to sign any out. Make sure the person requesting the CI for the DML has a valid reason for its use and signs it out and back in too. that people are aware of the process and that only componets from a DML should be used in the build phase and not what they find lying around.
Hope this helps
Jon

Hi
Licensing has always been tricky but now that we have gone to Virtualisation and Cloud Computing, what does that mean for Licensing T's & C's?
Microsoft and many other vendors have had to re-write their agreements to accomodate this move in technology but what does that mean to us who have to manage the licences deployed.
How do we prepare for the audits from the likes of Microsoft and Adobe and make sure we are compliant when most of our servers are virtual.
how does anyone else manage this?
