RavenOwl22/08/2008 2:27:25 PM We have a situation here, where more and more of our applications are sourced over the web. Links added on the company intranet are the only, actual changes being made, but these 3rd party applications are becoming more critical to our business.
How do we capture this type of change? I really feel we need to have some sort of record of when they go live.
clee495622/08/2008 3:40:14 PM i don't understand, if the applications are becoming more and more critical to your business. Won't you have a BA or someone that will talk with the 3rd party to understand their change?

Or am I misreading your question here?
MikeD26/08/2008 12:56:17 PM If the third-party applications are becoming more and more important then this implies that there is significant risk to your business if they do not perform as expected from both a utility and warranty perspective.

Even though an application is managed by a third party it should still go through some form of service transition to ensure that it meets your requirements. A change request should be raised and testing carried out to confirm that it meets your requirements prior to any links being created on the Intranet. Similarly, any updates need to be managed through Change Management to ensure that additional or changed functionality is tested and validated and so that end users are informed of those changes and know what to expect.
RavenOwl26/08/2008 3:28:38 PM Response to clee4596; Yes, I'm afraid you did misread the question. The BA's have done their business and we are going with an externally hosted system, now, how do we capture this type of change?
Confused7/01/2009 2:59:27 PM Is relocating data (doents/folders) to another location (from one drive to another) considered a change?
SimonR8/01/2009 3:03:38 PM Hi Confused. The short answer is yes, although one would hope that a standard change would cover this off. You would hope you would not have to raise a full RFC and have it presented at the CAB in order to move a doc ument.

The best answer is that if the doc ument is a CI and is under the control of the CMDB, and if the location of the doc u ment is an attribute then changing the location, the attribute would therefore require a RFC. This may seem a bit overkill, but if the doc ument was say, the disaster recovery plan, then this is a critical doc ument, and the locational change needs to be recorded. Also, if the doc ument was part of a critical business process (lets say it is a proce book or sales ledger), then again, any change of location should be recorded and verified.

As I mentioned, most of this can be preapproved, and subject to a Standard Change, thus reducing the overhead.

Hope that helps.
